Sanchi and the Great Stupas

The Ancient History of the Dhammagiri Stupa in India

Dhamma Giri at Igatpuri is a modern meditation centre with a pagoda, not an ancient stupa. Here is what is documented, and where to find genuinely ancient stupas.

A modern centre, not an ancient stupa

The title of this page suggests an ancient stupa called Dhammagiri. As far as can be verified, there is no well-documented ancient stupa of that name in India. The place most people mean is Dhamma Giri, a meditation centre at Igatpuri in Maharashtra, in the hills of the Western Ghats. It is a modern teaching institution, not an archaeological monument, and it has no ancient history of the kind a stupa such as Sanchi has.

The name is easy to understand. In Pali, dhamma refers to the teaching and giri means hill, so the phrase is often translated as “hill of the teaching” or something close to it. Names of this type are used in several places, which is part of why confusion arises.

What is documented about Dhamma Giri

Dhamma Giri is associated with the Vipassana meditation courses taught in the tradition of S. N. Goenka, which in turn draws on a Burmese lineage of lay teaching. The centre was established in the 1970s, and it is one of the better-known centres offering this course format, which is also taught at many other centres. It was originally known as the Vipassana International Academy.

It is run as a place for residential courses, not as a general tourist stop. Courses are typically around ten days long, are conducted in silence, and require registration in advance. Teachers at these centres are described as offering the courses on the basis of donations rather than set fees, but terms change, so anyone interested should consult the official centre information directly and not rely on this page.

The site is also described as having a pagoda-style building with meditation cells. This is a modern structure built for practitioners, in the same general tradition as East Asian pagoda forms that evolved from the stupa, but it is not a reliquary monument of the ancient type.

It is worth being clear about what this page does not do. It does not describe the meditation technique, and it does not speak for the centre or any tradition. Different Buddhist communities teach meditation practice in different ways.

Why the confusion matters

A visitor who travels to Igatpuri expecting to find carved railings or relics will not find them. Centres like this ask that participants arrive for the course itself, and walk-in sightseeing is generally not what they are set up for. Anyone planning a visit should first check whether they would be welcome, and under what conditions.

None of this is a criticism of the centre. It is simply a different kind of place from a heritage site, and it deserves to be understood on its own terms.

Genuinely ancient stupas to visit instead

If the interest is in ancient stupas, several well-documented sites exist within India:

  • Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh. The best-preserved early stupa complex, with a core traditionally attributed to the time of Emperor Ashoka. The Sanchi stupa is discussed in detail elsewhere in this cluster.
  • Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. The site of a great ancient stupa whose carved panels are now spread across museums.
  • Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh. The Dhamek Stupa stands near the traditional place of the first teaching.
  • Bharhut, Madhya Pradesh. The stupa itself is lost, but its railing sculpture survives in a museum.

For a sense of how these monuments are structured, the guide to the parts of a stupa gives a plain overview, and the explanation of Buddhist architecture shows how the form developed.

Practical note

Because the name Dhammagiri is shared or similar to others, searching for a destination by name alone can lead to the wrong place. Confirm the state, the district and the organisation before arranging travel. Rainfall in the Western Ghats is heavy in the monsoon months, so check the weather and any official travel guidance, in line with the usual monsoon travel considerations.
